It's the simple things

‘Ello I am Slate from the South of England and here are a few of my favourite things and what I was never expecting from working at a summer camp, through the year.

Friendships that span across the seven seas and the channel too! The shared experiences and the special moments all help to bring everyone a little closer. Whether those moments are going through the customs together or playing ultimate frisbee, they all help make the foundations of long lasting friendship.

It's all about the simple things, these are the moments that make a day and a week stand out from all the others. Who would have thought that introducing a one legged plastic squirrel to a group of High schoolers would lead to that becoming our mascot and that squirrel becoming an integral part of our week! It could be seen sitting on a fence post keeping a watchful gaze across the group throughout their stay.

Campfire Songs ! What a time of the day, the fun, the smiles, the silliness. An experience for all to see friends singing their heart out to watching children laughing giggling and giving it their all as they join in. After all, I want to be a Pizza man as much as any of them.

Story time at the end of every week sitting down in a big circle before bed and listening to all the kids' tales and highlights, the ones that make you ask "Why why why?!" The opportunity to share and learn more about each child and seeing all of them as individuals with their own lives but, have all come together and created a community over the course of the week.

This is now a place where I lay my hat and call home. This has been the greatest surprise for me. The most unexpected moment is the fact that I feel this is a place I feel truly at home. Thanks to all of those who I have met along the way this is an experience that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

Slate, over and out!
