Dear friends,
We may be in the heart of a cold winter, but we can still read about summer camp! I love to read, and will read just about any book with summer camp as a setting. If you are also in the mood for some reading about summer, I have three excellent recommendations. My first pick is the classic Gordon Korman book, "I Want to Go Home." I can't tell you how many times I have read this book, to myself, and out loud to children. It is about a boy who really doesn't want to be at camp and will do just about anything to get home, to the frustration of his counsellors and the camp director. This book is perfect for the middle-grade crowd but just about anyone who loves camp will enjoy this book.
The next recommendation is a young adult book called "The Lightning Circle" by Canadian author Vikki Vansickle. This book is written in verse, and tells the story of a young counsellor, in her first year working at camp. She loves her campers, creates lasting bonds with her co-counsellors, and discovers more about herself as the summer progresses. You can tell that the author worked as a counsellor and understands the magic of camp. This is a wonderful book if you have ever worked on a camp staff.
The last recommendation is for adult readers called "The God of the Woods" by Liz Moore. It is a thriller about a camp owner's child who goes missing from her cabin in the middle of the summer. This book will not be for everyone, but it is a fast-paced thriller with many twists and turns. And don't worry, Camp Kintail is nothing like the camp portrayed in this novel!
Please let me know your favourite summer camp novels. I would love a new book to read during the next storm!
Peace, Theresa
